Migraine is a common form of headache that is associated with symptoms such as sensitivity to light, noise and feeling of sickness. Migraine headaches can be very debilitating in some patients but now there is hope in the form of botulinum toxin injections, commonly referred to as botox injections.
For migraine treatment, a small amount of botulinum toxin is injected into various muscles in the forehead, temples, back of the head and the neck.
Botulinum toxin is believed to inhibit the release of certain pain chemicals, resulting in a knock-on effect on the pain processing systems that generate migraine headaches.
The injections may take up to a week to become effective and pain relief can last up to 3 months or longer, though this may not always be the case.
