Migraine

health No Comments »

Migraines induce severe pain and are more than just headaches. There are three common stages people experience during a migraine: prodrome, aura, and attack. Sharp pain is caused by the dilation of blood vessels surrounding the brain, which can also produce a throbbing sensation. Migraine triggers vary from person to person, but may include hormonal fluctuations, medications, foods, physical factors, sleep changes, or light.

➡️ Being Sick More Often
That is because vitamin D plays an important role in strengthening your body’s immune system. Every single cell in the human body has a receptor for vitamin D.

➡️ Increased Levels of Fatigue
Life can be very busy, and most of us normalize feeling tired pretty much all the time. However, it’s important to remember that ongoing fatigue can seriously impact your quality of life and overall health. There are many causes of increased fatigue, including vitamin D deficiency.

➡️ Hair Loss
Your skin has special cells that are responsible for processing a protein known as keratin which helps metabolize vitamin D in the skin. However, when they aren’t getting enough vitamin D, it causes issues in controlling how your body grows and sheds hair.

➡️ Slow Wound Healing
If you have a wound that is taking much longer to heal than normal, this could be caused by a vitamin D deficiency. Remember that vitamin D plays a key role in helping the body process keratin which is a protein that is vital to the health of our skin.

➡️ Increased Feelings of Depression
Not all doctors agree that vitamin D deficiency can cause increased feelings of depression. However, there is strong evidence that not getting enough of this vitamin can have a substantial impact on your mood.

➡️ Increased Muscle Pain
Every cell in the human body has receptors for vitamin D. This includes the nerve cells that are responsible for sensing pain as well.

➡️ Bone Loss
Many people are unaware that vitamin D is closely tied to calcium absorption. If your body isn’t getting enough vitamin D, over time, your bones may become weaker because they aren’t getting enough calcium.

➡️ Increased Lower Back Pain
Bone weakness is one of the primary causes of chronic lower back pain in adults. Doctors have noticed a significant connection between complaints about chronic low back pain and those with a vitamin D deficiency.

➡️ Weight Gain
Studies have consistently shown that people who have more body fat or a higher BMI also tend to have low vitamin D levels in their system. No one is sure why this happens, but it may be linked to behavioral or genetic factors.

➡️ Erectile Dysfunction
Vitamin D plays a key role in boosting the cardiovascular system and maintaining circulation. A study found a significant link between low vitamin D levels and the severity of ED. Researchers also found that the symptoms are worse in individuals with low levels of vitamin D compared to those with normal.

Migraine: A Neurological Condition That's Not Just in Your Head

health No Comments »

For more information on migraine or #YaleMedicine, visit: https://www.yalemedicine.org/conditions/migraine.

Everyone gets headaches from time to time, but migraines are different. For an estimated 15% to 18% of women and 6% of men with migraine, they endure not just intense pain in their head but also nausea; an inability to tolerate light, noise, or odors; confusion; overwhelming fatigue, and more—to the point that they are unable to keep working or be present with family and friends. This inability to function separates migraines from headaches. The good news is that knowledge about them and treatments for them have increased exponentially to the point that most migraine sufferers are able to enjoy meaningful relief that allows them to go about their lives in a fairly normal way. Doctors may prescribe medications, behavioral treatments and lifestyle changes, and even electrical stimulation devices. Learning to distinguish warning signs of an impending migraine from what have traditionally been called “triggers” can greatly improve someone’s ability to manage these episodes. “The understanding of migraine biology and the treatments available have exploded in the last decade; with proper education, consistent use of the tools available can improve the lives of most migraine patients,” says Christopher Gottschalk, MD, a Yale Medicine neurologist and director of Yale Medicine’s Headache and Facial Pain Center. “Unfortunately, migraine remains underdiagnosed, undertreated, and underestimated—according to reports, migraine causes more disability than all other neurological conditions combined. But learning to identify the early signs of a migraine attack and intervene quickly and effectively can provide patients with a level of control they never thought was possible,” he says.
