Zaza Katsarava, MD, PhD, MSc, University of Essen, Essen, Germany, outlines the key concepts in the management of medication overuse headache. Many patients with migraine or tension-type headache develop chronic medication overuse headache, which is associated with a reduced quality of life and psychiatric comorbidities. Prof. Katsarava highlights patient education and medication detoxification as a critical step in the effective management of these patients. Medical prevention of their underlying headache and treatment of psychiatric comorbidities are also necessary. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
